as i walked around more it became clear to me where several of the breaching points for flooding in the neighborhood came from.
one the spots flood waters come from is our back yard. the levee which protects most of the rosemont terrace neighborhood levels off between lafeyette street and new york street. so once the water comes into our back yard it then travels downhill over onto the lower parts of lafayette and alma street which are like a large bowl.
i remember in the 2006 flood hearing the water rush through our back yard and then under our neighbors fence. that time around it was pitch dark out, but you could still tell the water was headed for lafayette street.
the second spot the flood waters come from is further up new york street (pictured here). there is a small dip in the area where the condos were built. there is no barrier in back of the houses on the left side of the street, so the brook just comes up uninhibited. when the water rises high enough it spills over onto lafayette street to again fill "the bowl".
when these condos were being built one of the neighbors told the builder he shouldn't be building a deck off the back of the house, he should be building a dock... so true.
if you look close you can see a duck swimming near the edge of the water.
