History of The O.B.C (1982-present)On a cold, snowy night in January 1982 in our home in Pocasset, I discussed with Connie Lyons the value of and the ways to bring families together for at least once-a-year reunion. My motivation was to nurture a closeness within individual families as well related families sharing a common genealogical heritage. I was particularly concerned about the possibility of diminishing contacts with the families of my deceased brothers, Tommie. and Eddie, and my cousins and their families. Both Connie and I have enjoyed personal growth from a background of caddying and enriched by recreational golf. Our conclusion was obvious. Lets have annual reunions with golf as the centerpiece to challenge the competitive juices of the athletes and combine that with fellowship and sharing with a pot-luck buffet. We also thought that it would be a way of encouraging non-golfers to get into the joy of this wonderful game. We began in the summer of 1982 at Pocasset Golf Club and in recent years have been playing at Holly Ridge in Sandwich. Our golf courses have included Pocasset (2 yrs), Cape Cod Country Club (2 yrs), Iyanough now known as Hyannis Golf Club (3 yrs), Ocean Edge (due to the influence of Pat Bradley), and Holly Ridge (8 yrs.). Our hosts over the years for the buffets have included Rose and Bob O'Brien, Irene Brown, Ann and Dale Carlisle, and of course now and for a long time our perennial hostess, Kathleen Bradley. I should note here with gratitude that the menus have been fantastic both in variety and quantity. Furthermore, we appreciate the generosity of our Off-Cape family for allowing us to have the Festivities on the Cape so far. The selection of "OBC" is our way of honoring the families who represented the roots then of the existing family tree, i.e. O'Brien, Bradley, Brown, Carlisle and Coveney . We have had a lot of fun over the past 16 years and we look forward to more of the same for many years to come. Every year only a small number get specific trophies, but as far as I am concerned you are all champions as you demonstrate clearly the concern, support and love that we have for each other. We offer a special welcome to those who have joined our family through birth, adoption or marriage in the last 16 1/2 years. Also, special praise and gratitude to those of our family who have married in the last 16 1/2 years and for their patience. and wisdom in selecting truly extraordinary spouses. Finally, may we make a family commitment to remember always in our prayers those beloved family ..members who were with us in 1982 and are no longer sharing the joys of this reunion Aunt Celia, Aunt May, Jack Bradley, Dick Bradley, Frank Kearney, Sr., Dave O'Brien, Buzz O'Brien and his wife Mary. Lets make this reunion, our 17th, at Little Harbor, on Oct. 18th, the bet ever. May God continue to bless each one of us. -Bob O'Brien (with a great assist from Connie Lyons for pointing us in the right direction) |
