as soon as i got out of work, i floored it to new york street. i wanted to see first hand just how bad it was.
niki and steve had traveled to the house by canoe earlier in the day. niki said that the water was very deep. at one point, she looked below to what she initially thought was a picnic table, but really, it was a car... she said that she was able to row right over people's fences as she made her way over from alma street to new york street.
when they arrived, they found that the water had filled the basement about two thirds of the way. on the back porch, the water still had about another three steps to go. based on what she said, the water would probably need to rise another three feet or so to come into the living quarters.
now, later in the day, i was able to see it for myself. when i first pulled up, things looked awful. the neighborhood was now a large lake. on the right side of the road, most of the ranches seemed pretty dry, but it was certain that their basements were flooded to some degree. to the left were the new condos. the garages of the condos were almost completely submerged. it was a bad scene.
it was really hard to get a good view of our house. it was a good 200 yards down the street. as i walked around to get a good view, i started to notice that the landscaping at the end of the street was still visible... then i was able to see that our picket fence, which ran alongside of the driveway was visible from top to bottom. then i saw our neighbor's car, sitting at the edge of our driveway, with the tires fully in view. this was all good to see. there was a real shot that the water never made it into the first floor.
there were about a dozen people looking on, mostly neighbors. one of the guys mentioned that the water had gone down a little in the twenty minutes he had been there. i look to the edge of the water and saw a sewer bubbling up air as the water drained into it. this was another good sign.
